Since its purchase by Santa Fe County in 2002, using a combination of bond money & private donations, public access to the 86 acre site has gradually improved. There is now an 8 car parking area & bus turn-around at the access point off Old Agua Fria Road. There are plans for additional construction this spring & summer to create over 2 miles of hiking & biking trail! Eventually there will be a "lower" parking lot off Arroyo Hondo Road but there are lots of logistical issues that have slowed progress. You may also see some people doing wetland restoration as you drive by the dam area in early 2011.
On the property, you can see plenty of ravens & occasionally, flights of pinon jays or an elusive Townsends Solitaire. Bobcat, deer, coyotes, weasels and squirrels have all been observed coming to water. The views are spectacular as well. Get out there & see for yourself!
